The movie begins with Ty (Columbus Short), the main character, going to work like any other day. They travel to a bank and pick up something that needs to be moved.
Quote

Once they exit the bank with the money, Baines (Laurence Fishburne) signals for them to wait. He says a black van has circled their truck twice, and to be on the look out. They load up and move out. However, while traveling along a back road, their truck stalls. Baines tries to start the truck, but can't. The truck has been sabotaged by someone putting sugar in the gas tank. They try to radio for help, but can't, they are in a radio dead zone. Just then, the black van speeds up behind the truck and four men in gas masks jump out and stick a bomb to the back window. Ty tries to get away, but is stuck next to the bomb. The bomb goes off, and... launches a bottle rocket into the truck. It was all a prank being played on Ty. They all laugh it off and drive back, saying it was a prank.
After work, Ty and all his coworkers are at the bar, discussing how other people have successfully robbed armored trucks before, to judge how Ty reacts. Mike (Matt Dillon) takes Ty home, but stops at a hot dog stand first. They get hot dogs, and on the way home from the stand, Mike breaks the news - they want Ty to help with a robbery. Their plan is to pick up 42$ million from a bank, but instead of delivering it where it is supposed to go, they want to stash it all, torch the trucks, and fake being robbed.
Ty is furious that they would suggest something, knowing that if they get caught, he'd go to jail and his brother, Jimmy (Andre Kinney) would be left without a guardian.
Ty walks home instead of accepting Mike's ride, and is greeted by a Child Welfare agent. Ty welcomes her in and they discuss what is happening.
The agent reveals that Jimmy has now missed more days of school than attended. Ty gets angry and asks Jimmy why, and he responds with "I was looking for a job so we don't lose the house". This catches the attention of the welfare agent who suggests that Jimmy be put into foster care. Ty gets furious with the woman and explains that they both lost their mother and father earlier that year and there was no way he would be separated from his brother. She leaves.
The next day is the day for the robbery. Mike comes into work and explains that the robbery is off, since Ty won't do it, and if he isn't in on it, he could easily turn them in.
But, Ty walks in right after. He agrees to the heist only as long as nobody gets hurt.
The plan kicks in. They go to the bank and pick up the 42$ million, and leave the bank. On route to the drop off, Ty makes the status report, and is told that he has 58 minutes until his next one, meaning they have 58 minutes to finish the heist before people start looking for them. They take a detour and drive the armored trucks into an abandoned steel yard.
They all work together and take the bricks of money, bag them, then hide them in a deep, dark hole inside one of the steelyard sheds. Right as they finish unloading the first truck, Quinn (Jean Reno) notices somebody watching them.

There is a homeless man (Nick Jameson) watching them unload the money. They chase him down and Baines pulls out his shotgun. They try to keep him from shooting the homeless man, but he shoots him anyway. They all leave him on the ground to bleed, but Ty helps him back up and begins to drag him out of the steel yard. Then, Mike pulls his gun and kills the homeless man. There is blood all over Ty's hands now.
Ty then jumps into the second armored truck and slams the doors shut and locks all the doors with him inside. Inside the truck, he is completely protected by just about everything.
Mike realizes what he is doing and tries to stop him, but can't.
Time is counting down for everyone. They only have 45 minutes to finish the heist before they miss their radio check in and the police start searching. They find an old railroad spike and a piece of steel to use as a hammer and start hammering the pins out of the hinges. This is extremely slow.
Ty, looking for options to contact the police, tries to use the radio, but they are in a dead spot. He instead triggers the siren that is on top of the armored truck.

The siren is loud enough to travel through the streets and reach a lone police officer who just happens to be sitting close enough. He gets in his police car and starts traveling to the source of the siren.

Baines pulls out the fuse to the siren, turning it off, but the police officer finds it anyway. He gets out of his car and goes to investigate. Mike stops him before he enters, and claims to be a security guard for the abandoned steel mill. Just as he convinces the police officer to leave, Ty sets the siren off again by shorting it with a flashlight battery. This, of course, gets the attention of the officer, who turns to enter the mill and is shot by Baines.

The officer is still alive, and they drag him inside. While they are all standing over the cop trying to figure out what to do, Ty leaves the armored truck and pours gasoline on the stashed money then tosses in a flare, blowing up and igniting all the money inside. When all the robbers to over to try and save the money, Ty grabs the injured officer and drags him into the armored truck, then begins trying to patch up his wounds.

While this is going on, Dobbs (Skeet Ulrich) comes over to the truck and wants to help Ty stop them. He agrees to try and get the fuse to the siren again, but is caught trying to pickpocket it out of Mike's jacket. They tell him that everything will be okay, but then Quinn stabs him to death.

After this, Ty starts covering up all the windows with money to block the view inside. Quinn gets in the other armored car and drives away for something.
After covering all the windows, Ty takes the officers radio and pries off an access hatch on the bottom of the van. His plan is to get to the roof of the mill and call for the police.
His plan works, and he gets to the roof. He is able to make the call out to the police, and they are on their way. However, Palmer catches him on the roof trying to make the call. He holds him up and threatens to shoot him, but Ty talks him out of it. Palmer asks Ty if he thinks "god" will forgive him, and jumps off the building, killing himself.
Ty sneaks back into the van, right as Quinn returns to the mill. He opens the back, and inside is Ty's brother. Ty sees this and immediately starts setting up something for the remaining three robbers. Right as they threaten to shoot his brother, Ty opens the truck and is pulled out along with the officer, who is still alive.
Baines and Quinn enter the truck and open the last box of money. Inside is actually a bomb rigged up by Ty seemingly out of nowhere, using flares and a flashlight. This blows up and kills them both. All that remains is Mike. Ty makes a run for it out of the mill and is chased by Mike in the armored truck.

Using fancy footwork, Ty manages to lead Mike's truck into a deep ditch, where it lands and flips, killing Mike.

The next scene is Ty in the hospital, waiting to hear the news about the officer he saved. His boss, Ashcroft (Fred Ward) leaves the room the officer is in and tells Ty that he will be okay. He also finds out that the officer told Ashcroft what happened, and he mentions that because of his bravery in stopping the robbery, there may be a reward, implying that his financial problems will be solved without stealing from the bank.
